Community Bulletin

Message from Sustainable Resource Development - November 4, 2011

Due to current dry, fall conditions, Albertans are asked to take precautions to prevent wildfires. Dead grass and woody debris combined with windy conditions can support a fast-moving wildfire. We urge you to delay brush pile burning until there is a good amount of snow on the ground.

Keep winter burns small and always go back and ensure your burn is extinguished. Fires that are not completely extinguished can smoulder underground during the winter months and re-surface in the spring as a wildfire.

To report a wildfire call 310-FIRE(3473)

Smith-Hondo Plan Land Sales

The MD has been getting a number of calls regarding the selling of public lands as part of the Smith/Hondo Plan which was on the front page of the October 19th edition of the Lakeside Leader following the October 12th Council meeting.

Approximately 25% of lands eligible for sale by Alberta Sustainable Resources Development have been sold to date and this triggered the plan’s review. Council supported the continuance of selling available public lands with a stipulation that purchasers are made aware of the MD’s position on road construction/access as per Policy E.11.

Please note that the MD is NOT responsible for selling any of these lands.  For more information, call Roy Hewitt with Sustainable Resource Development in Barrhead at (780)674-8231.

The University of Lethbridge is looking to interview families with children between the ages of 9 and 12 for its research project on how children, families and the community at large have been coping in the aftermath of the wildfire. If you're willing to share your family's experiences and insights, please contact Anna at 1-877-382-7119 or wildfire@uleth.ca. For more information about this important project, visit ruralwildfire.ca.
